Lord, Let Your Mercy Be On Us, As We Place Our Trust In You

I was struck by the responsorial psalm in Mass today:  "Lord, let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you."

What a beautiful, perfectly packaged Divine Mercy message planted so long ago in a beautiful psalm.  That seed continues to produce fruit today - perhaps now more than ever.

As we look back over the history of mankind, we see a continually merciful God who loves His people and continues to show His love to them - most especially through His mercy.

Some people call the God of the Old Testament the "angry" God or the "vengeful" God.  But have you ever stopped and read the entire Bible and viewed its events in context?  We continually see God trying to love and correct an increasingly wayward people - only using harsher methods when the gentler ones had failed.  When you read the entire Bible and get a broader perspective, you gain an appreciation for the mercy of God.  You just might say, "God, I can't believe you put up with all of that!  I certainly would have expressed my wrath much sooner had I been in Your shoes!"

And then you might stop and reflect about just how much God puts up with us...with me and with you.  I know I've failed God countless times and each and every single time - multiple times a day - God responds in kindness and mercy.  It can be easy to look around the world and be dishearted by how prevelent sin is around us and in our own lives.  But we also remember the beautiful promise of Romans 5:20 "...where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more."  Not that we should rejoice in sin, of course, but we have a promise that we can celebrate - a promise of the tremendous mercy of God overflowing right now - for us.
